The Ghan is an Australian passenger train connecting Adelaide (in the south) with Darwin (in the north) via Alice Springs (in the centre). It's one of the greatest railway journeys you can make in the world. A full trip takes 54 hours to travel the 2979 kilometres of track. Trains run weekly and are operated by Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions (formerly known as Great Southern Rail). The name originated from an abbreviated version of its previous nickname, The Afghan Express.
